A town with character

Bedford is a vibrant, multicultural market town with a strong sense of identity and an increasingly exciting future.

At its heart is the River Great Ouse and the town’s picturesque Embankment, where daily walks have been enjoyed since Victorian times. The river continues to shape life in Bedford today - hosting regular regattas and attracting national and international rowing clubs and schools.

Green space and outdoor living

Green space is central to Bedford life. Russell Park hosts the annual Kite Festival and, every two years, the Bedford River Festival - widely regarded as the second largest outdoor event in the UK after the Notting Hill Carnival.

Bedford Park, one of the finest Victorian parks in the region, is home to Proms in the Park each summer, combining classical performances with contemporary headline acts in a relaxed outdoor setting.

Culture and community

Bedford has a thriving cultural scene with a strong community feel. The Corn Exchange hosts a wide programme of performances, including the long-established Bedfordshire Festival of Music, Speech and Drama.

The town also supports a lively grassroots arts scene, with the annual ‘Bedfringe’ festival showcasing local creativity and emerging talent.

Food, drink and everyday life

Bedford’s diverse population is reflected in its excellent range of restaurants, cafés and independent businesses.

From traditional pubs to a wide variety of international cuisines, the town offers something for every taste, with a growing reputation for quality and choice.

Sport and active living

Sport is deeply embedded in Bedford’s identity. Bedford Blues, founded in 1886, remain a cornerstone of the town and compete at Championship level, with a proud history of producing international players.

The Bedford International Athletic Stadium further reinforces the town’s sporting reputation, hosting national and international track and field events.

A town on the rise

Bedford is increasingly recognised as a place of growth and opportunity. It has recently been ranked by The Times as one of the best places to live in the East of England, reflecting its balance of character, connectivity and value.

Major investment is also shaping the town’s future. Plans for the Universal theme park Bedford are set to bring significant economic and employment opportunities, further raising Bedford’s profile as a destination.

Well connected

Bedford offers excellent connectivity for both commuters and businesses. Fast rail services reach London St Pancras in around 40 minutes.

Looking ahead, the delivery of East West Rail will strengthen links between Oxford, Milton Keynes, Bedford and Cambridge - positioning the town at the centre of one of the UK’s most important growth corridors.

By road, the M1 and A1 are easily accessible, with Milton Keynes and Cambridge both within comfortable reach.
